Abstract
It is impossible to call any one moment in world history the origin of modern international relations. However, the articulation of Spanish-Amerindian relations in the sixteenth century is a useful starting point to trace the evolution of a European discourse on civilization. On this basis, Pearcey uses that moment to start revising the ‘orthodox’ account of the evolution and expansion of international society, before turning to a case study analysis of early nineteenth-century US Supreme Court decisions.
