Abstract

In this contribution, Susan Robertson responds to Jousch Andris Barblan’s speech at the 18th International Conference on Higher Education, Istanbul, Turkey, August 2005. In her response, Robertson positions Barblan’s speech in relation to other shifts happening both regionally in the European Union and globally in higher education. She places a call for renewal vis-à-vis a decade of higher education reform to suggest that the continued unfolding of neoliberal policies has resulted in the emptying of the conditions for democracy. She agrees with Barblan on the political, courageous and creative work yet to be done if higher education is truly to face renewal beyond the walls of the university, to address questions about the kinds of society citizens want.
