Abstract

Gerrard discusses the creation of the first Carry On film. By placing the movie directly into Britain’s war film canon, he uses the analysis of key scenes to demonstrate how Carry On Sergeant places ideas of utopian collectiveness at the very heart of the Carry On ethos. The film is a product of the late 1950s, and Gerrard argues that male sexuality and the threat of the Cold War were dealt with through succinct, comic ways.
