Abstract
This chapter explores problems associated in developing teaching skills and approaches in times of change for the further education and skills (sector. Some of the social and cultural shifts that have taken place have been profound. However, like the metaphor of Grandfather’s axe with its new heads and new handles, programmes of study, while completely new, still embody values, histories and traditions that are central to its being. In this chapter, the principles of Education for Sustainable Development will be discussed in relation to curriculum development and value-based responses to a changing world to help practitioners promote such issues in their own practice. It looks at how the initial teacher education programmes have sustained their values over the periods of change since 1998.
