Abstract

This chapter aims at providing an overall understanding of the asymmetrical economic relations between New Zealand and China. To achieve this, this chapter identifies three key areas for consideration in terms of New Zealand’s response to China’s economic rise in the world: (1) to provide a historical path for the development of the bilateral relationship in the context of the purpose and value of New Zealand international economic activities; (2) to analyse the driving forces and long-term sustainability of the Chinese economic growth in order to nurture a more balanced structure of interests and incentives for the bilateral economic relations; and (3) to incorporate the effects of a growing Chinese economy into the overall development of the New Zealand economy.
