Abstract

This chapter presents the events that have taken place in Europe in recent years, from the debates on multiculturalism’s perceived failure to more recent discussions about terrorism and the migration crisis, all of which have involved policies that have bedevilled most European nations. A skim through these debates and policies show that the relevant discourse propounds a notion of “us and them,” and different strategies have been shaped to manage diversity. It is possible to discern a distinction between “weak” and “strong” multiculturalism, and, in particular, migrant women have been visible in the debates in an attempt to bring into sharper focus the differences that are claimed to exist between the majority and minorities.
