Abstract

Bona Sforza was allegedly a poisoner, a power-hungry absolutist and an unsuitable mother. This chapter will evaluate Bona’s relationship with her son and four daughters in the view of stereotypes, the scholarly debate and the representation of the queen in television and political satire of the communist period. Apart from standard historical sources, this chapter will engage with two cultural works created under communist censorship, a collection of satirical feuilletons on Polish kings and queens and a television series on Bona’s life. It will allow for exploring the extent to which the communist image of Bona, as a mother who used her children as pawns in her political game, was built on the stereotypical views found in sixteenth-century sources. This chapter will also examine whether Bona’s ambitions determined the contemporary sixteenth-century perception of her as an unsuitable mother. The question of whether Bona was a bad mother, or if the image constructed as a result of her being politically incorrect with regards to sixteenth-century gender politics, still remains to be answered.
