Welfare State Transformations and Inequality in OECD Countries

Part of the book series: Transformations of the State ((TRST))

Abstract

This chapter sets the stage for the rest of the volume by showing the importance of researching the link between welfare state transformations and inequality. The editors present the trends of rising inequality and discuss why scholars, policy-makers and the general public (should) worry about this development. They differentiate between intrinsic and instrumental concerns that arise with growing disparities. Furthermore, they outline broad trends of welfare state transformations across OECD countries after the ‘Golden Age’ of the welfare state, and the reader learns what to expect from the remainder of this volume.
