Genderqueer and Non-Binary Genders

Abstract

This chapter discusses the psychiatric aspects of non-binary genders. In particular, it describes the history and current psychiatric classification of trans and non-binary genders; the prevalence of non-binary identities; the relationship between non-binary gender identities and trans binary identities; the relationship between non-binary identities and mental illness and neuroatypicality; and the psychiatric evaluation of non-binary identities. Finally, it argues that research needs to focus on issues pertinent to non-binary-identified people and their treatment without pathologising their identities, and that psychiatrists need to become more aware of non-binary identities in both general psychiatric and specialist trans health clinic settings.
