Abstract
This chapter seeks common denominators in work communities that allow for sites of potential union and collaboration. Mayock suggests that employees can unite or “bond” around the work. The author examines inclusiveness in formal and informal settings and in institutional documents to recommend ways in which administrators can hear and incorporate seemingly opposing voices into the language of the workplace. Atul Gawande’s “power of negative thinking” is highlighted to foment a consciously critical approach to institutional communication.

My undergraduate alma mater, the University of Virginia, in 2014, experienced Title IX shock when The Rolling Stone reported on an alleged gang rape at one of the University’s fraternities. While this article’s content was found to be unreliable, the University of Virginia continues to address underlying issues of sexual violence. See also Jon Krakauer’s Missoula. Rape and the Justice System in a College Town for an in-depth look at rape and the climate of sexual violence on this Montana campus.
