Abstract

This chapter focuses on the development of village companies. Since the early 1990s, the actual political administration of village areas has been gradually transferred to the urban districts and street offices. In 1992, the city government of Shenzhen encouraged the urban villages to form their own companies to smooth their transition from rural to urban. The urban villagers took on the task with ease and all have formed some kind of joint-stock company. Since then, the villages have struggled and strived for the betterment of their urban village companies. The urban village company is supposed to be only an economic organization and yet it continues to wield great influence within the villages.

  2. 2.

Due to issues of sensitivities and anonymity, individuals or village companies with whom interviews were conducted will note be named.
