Abstract

Montero Perez et al.’s review of research on captioned viewing, published in 2013, identified 150 relevant studies. At the time of writing this book, the pace of research had been quickening, and we appear to be generating ever more research, most of it replicating what we already know but in different contexts; there have been approximately 130 published studies or unpublished dissertations on captioned viewing and language learning since the cut-off time of my state-of-the-art review in 2009. As going back to original sources is really an obligation on all serious researchers, we are very fortunate in having an up-to-date database of research on captions and second/foreign language acquisition maintained by Gûnter Burger at http://www.fremdsprache-und-spielfilm.de/Captions.htm
