Abstract

French historian Pierre Nora’s edited collection Les Lieux de mémoire (1984–1992) is the signature text in the emergence of the memory phenomenon as manifestation of the crisis of modern historiography. I analyze the way Nora shaped the structure and content of this project as a genealogy of the French national memory. I discuss Nora’s perspective on the study 30 years after its inception, together with that of his critics.
