Abstract
This chapter tries to present a general picture of China’s higher education, specifically its development from elite education to massification, the policy and ideology changes, and the strategies and measures taken by both the government and higher education institutions to ensure accessibility and education quality. Problems are also analyzed in light of the social and cultural values. It suggests that higher education in China still needs time to get rid of the traditional influence of elite education for its operation, expectation, and evaluation.
