Abstract
After Oedipus connotes ‘in lieu of Oedipus’, ‘in the manner of Oedipus’, ‘chronologically posterior (aprés) to Oedipus’. The subheading of this book, I argue in this chapter, could have been ‘Catastrophe survived’ or ‘Aporia and hope in the twenty-first century’. We pay homage to the tragic subject while rethinking the question of the Sphinx. Once again, uncertainty emerges as the preferred way of thinking. Confronted with it, we re-examine our myths seeking both hermeneia and paramythia: consolation-exhortation for the future.
