Performing The Refrain of Art Research and Practice

The drilling down of standardized “high-stakes testing” in today’s schools points to a systemic problem within the social, political, and economic ecology of American culture obsessed with neo-liberal and neo-conservative values and ambitions to entrench American exceptionalism, which is an ironic, hollow compulsion considering that it comes at the expense of the Nation’s public schools. In this writing, I challenge the exclusive reliance on standardized understandings; knowledge that stands on ceremony more than substance; more about semiotics than pragmatics, focused on reproducing existing meanings at the exclusion of those that can potentially emerge differently. Considering The Refrain of Deleuze|Guattari in terms of art research and practice, I argue not against standardized understandings, but an eagerness to be affected and played by them as the basis for experimentation and improvisation; that is, playing with and inflecting standardizations in order to create new and different ways of thinking.
