Abstract
Hertig discusses striking characteristics of globalized higher education relevant to the topic of the book. Based on these, he defines the conditions that must be fulfilled to successfully compete as a world-class research university (WCRU) with the best of the best in 10 critical areas: local context, funding, faculty, students, research portfolio, structure and governance, leadership, global spirit, off-campus stakeholders and reputation management. Actual performance and the perception of peers and stakeholders regarding performance contribute to the data pool the ranking producers draw from to manufacture league tables—their verdicts back-fire and continuously reshape the objects they measure and judge. The author shows the impact of rankings on the WCRUs and why ignoring them is not an option for the ranked.
