Abstract
This chapter introduces the approach used to deliver affordable housing in Hong Kong, which provides an interesting case in which to examine a series of long-standing government schemes for affordable public housing rental and home purchase, and the ways in which issues concerning the long-term management, maintenance and renewal of high-rise housing are managed, seemingly without the significant social problems associated with concentrated disadvantage that have characterised similar public housing schemes in the USA, the UK and Australia. The case of China, where the government has made recent commitments to deliver affordable housing, also provides an interesting case to examine. The chapter concludes by highlighting the potential lessons arising from the more established example of Hong Kong and more recent experience in China, for other nations facing critical undersupply of new housing production and affordable housing shortage.
