Abstract
In this chapter, we open the window for L2 development. There is a focus on ways to teach in order to enhance students’ motivation for L2 English learning. Among other things, we make suggestions as to how teachers can draw on learners’ extramural English in teaching, and we will revisit the EE House as a possible means for doing so. The chapter also devotes a specific section to presenting a specific learner, namely a highly motivated multilingual boy who took charge of his own learning. Another topic covered includes what teachers may have to compensate for in the classroom as regards what learners may ‘lack.’ With the help of Shulman’s (1986, 1987) framework, we illustrate what successful L2 English teachers tend to do and elaborate on the topic of English subject education, and stress the importance of planning for successful teaching. Additional topics are online tools for teaching and suggested work in classrooms that are offline. In brief, the chapter points to several ways in which teachers can help learners along their idiosyncratic L2 English learning paths.
