Public Service Interpreting and Business Negotiation Interpreting: Friends or Foes?

Abstract

The present chapter focuses on BNI, on its complexities, idiosyncrasies, differences, and similarities as compared with other forms of PSI. By analysing the specifics of the interpreter’s role in business negotiation settings it should be possible to analyse whether BNI belongs to any of the existing genres of interpreting, or whether it is developing as a distinct genre, requiring distinct skills and training. As interpreting does not happen in a social vacuum but rather occurs within an institution that is permeable to the mandates of society and other institutional and societal influences, it is important to prescribe and describe the role of interpreters within the specific context where the interaction is embedded, and that is what the present chapter aims to do.
