Abstract

This chapter provides an account of the decolonization of Mozambique and the reactions of Rhodesia and South Africa to it. It explores the ending of ALCORA and the decision of the South Africans to reject intervention in Mozambique and pursue a policy of détente at the expense of the Rhodesian government. The twisting path of détente and the failure of the Victoria Falls to bring peace to Rhodesia are also considered.
