Abstract

Sam H. Harris (1872–1941) and George M. Cohan (1878–1942) were extremely active in cultivating early musical comedy, focusing on a performer-centred type of book musical. Harris collaborated with composer-lyricist-performer Irving Berlin (1888–1989) on the series of Music Box Revues during the 1920s and with playwright George S. Kaufman (1889–1961), among others, on satirical and inventive shows in the 1930s.
