The Ageing Stars of European Art-House Cinema: Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva in Amour

This chapter argues that Michael Haneke’s Amour provides an unflinching and harrowing account of the ageing process. Furthermore, it inflicts this ageing process most dramatically on its female star, Emmanuelle Riva. The film then draws on the accumulated meaning of her star persona across a range of European art-house cinema (Hiroshima Mon Amour, Blue) to meditate on memory, recognition, and the role of cinematic technology in creating and preserving the star performance. The chapter concludes that Haneke thus foregrounds the role of technology in mediating our relationship to stars. Therefore, although Amour is a more intimate and solipsistic film than his previous work, it continues Haneke’s authorial project of examining how image-making technologies mediate our relationship to reality.
