Abstract
In the introduction, titled “This Queer Creature” in reference to a “little man” Tolkien describes in an encounter in “A Secret Vice,” Jane Chance explore his use of this persona or doppelganger in terms of the concepts of alterity and the queer identified by theorists Lee Edelman, Alexander Doty, and medievalist Tison Pugh to identify what might be termed his aesthetic of a “queer medievalism.”
