Abstract

Hanser prepares the music therapist for meeting the person who is ill or suffering, and explores the evolving relationships between the music therapist, the music, and the companion. Hanser calls the patient or client a companion on the journey, emphasizing the “inner healer” that a sick person can access in the course of dealing with an illness. In effect, the music therapist and companion are both healers, using the properties of music to accompany an inner journey from illness to wellness. Techniques include activities that guide the music therapist from the initial preparation for a session to its conclusion.
