Abstract
This chapter lays out an epistemic map that later helps in understanding the ramifications of the commodification of university knowledge. สยาม (S̄yām) Thailand has a distinct Buddhist epistemological tradition that is considered here. The key concepts of the book, ปัญญา (panjaa) wisdom and ความรู้ (khwaamrúu) knowledge, are introduced with a discussion of a range of literature and insights from data. It then examines the state of wisdom in the modern state of S̄yām Thailand and the efforts being made to balance the old and the new in the university context. This chapter examines the potential in S̄yām Thailand to balance old knowledge traditions, Buddhist and rural, with new Thai and imported knowledge.
