Abstract
Chapter Six sums up the place of adultery in the work of the four stars under these categories: motherhood and children, physical locations, and the treatment of death. It identifies where the work of the stars is widely divergent, and where there are areas of continuity, arguing that the individual female stars created roles in their films which are both broadly coherent in each case and offer points of similarity and of difference to each other. The books concludes by analyzing scenes taken from at or near the ends of four films, which reflect the emphases to be found in the work of each of the stars. These are Now, Voyager (Davis), Letter from an Unknown Woman (Fontaine), Strangers When We Meet (Novak), and Plenty (Streep).
