Abstract
Knapp and Hulbert evaluate the practice of ghostwriting in the academic context, first clarifying how ghostwriting may differ from related forms of academic misconduct, such as plagiarism. They then explore the use of ghostwriters by students, beginning with college admissions essays. The authors examine statistics and case studies indicating that, while not the most prevalent form of academic cheating, many students use ghostwriters while in college. Finally, the authors briefly comment on the use of ghostwriters by university faculty. The authors conclude by offering reflections on the practice of ghostwriting in academia through the lens of the ethical framework introduced in Chap. 1.
