Abstract

The concept of a ‘minority’ is not as unambiguous as it may appear at first glance. It may mean different things to different people. A jurist would be concerned about a group’s legal protection, safeguards and rights such as freedom of expression and the right to justice. A sociologist may be concerned with a group’s culture, language and ethnic identity. An economist is more concerned with the socio-economic condition or disadvantage of a group than its religion or other noneconomic attributes.
