Abstract

The dramatic changes in China over the past two decades have seen it embark on an unprecedented process of opening up to the outside world. From the perspective of Europe, the newly modernizing China provided new opportunities and new challenges. Now, as we approach the start of a new century, the relations between Europe and China seem set to enter into a new phase. Hong Kong and Macau are in the midst of their transition to Chinese rule again, China is moving on with new leaders and Europe is reaching an important stage in its recreation as a unified entity.
