Teachers Being Observed: Coming to Terms with Classroom Appraisal

Abstract

There are many ways in which practising English language teachers can be appraised, and one of these is by means of observation in the classroom. For many in the profession, classroom appraisal is a very important part of their employment, as it determines career progression. However, relevant literature is limited: mainstream education texts available on the subject tend to focus on preparation for the experience and what to do as an observer, rather than what actually happens in the classroom. In the field of TESOL, the focus of observation literature is usually on strategies used for research rather than for appraisal purposes.
