The Radical Reformer: Fang Lizhi

  • Ka-ho Mok

Fang Lizhi, China’s most prominent advocate of democracy and human rights, has repeatedly affirmed the significance of freedom and democratization in mainland China. His critical stand and boldness have received wide support from university students. His persistent call for respect for human rights and democracy has made him a dissident widely recognized in the West. Fang has been regarded as China’s Andrei Sakharov (Atlantic Monthly, May 1988) and ‘China’s Tom Paine’ (Washington Post, November 1987) since the anti-bourgeois campaign in 1986–87.
