Small Asias in the West—Asian Film Festivals Inside and Outside of Asia
Starting with Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon (1950) at Venice, Asian films have screened and won awards at major film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. During the current millennium, smaller festivals devoted to the screening of Asian films have emerged to form an infrastructure within the “international film festival network.” These include the Udine Far East Film Festival in Italy, Nippon Connection in Germany, Camera Japan in The Netherlands, and Helsinki Cine Aasia in Finland. They are increasingly functioning as alternative distribution routes for Asian films as well as for films that are unable to enter major film festivals (e.g. Chinese unofficial indie films). Programming varies from festivals devoted to the cinema of one Asian country to festivals covering all Asia. Another programming choice is genre. The essay looks at the evolution of these festivals, as well as their complementary task of bringing Asian films to their particular cities/countries.
