Abstract

This chapter analyses and questions the role of traditional Arab journalists as agents of democratic change in the particularly arduous and unpredictable regimes transition from autocracy. Solidly linked to both political setbacks and successes, media democratization is itself a major factor in shaping the outcome of the transition. While reflecting on existing literature on the role of media as an agent to support democratic change, the chapter attempts to complement it by drawing on specific examples from Arab journalists’ experiences.
