Dramaturgical Complicity: Representing Trauma in Brokentalkers’ The Blue Boy

This chapter, a performance analysis, argues that Brokentalkers’ The Blue Boy employs specific representational and dramaturgical strategies to closely approximate the affective and embodied experience of trauma resulting from institutional abuse in Ireland. Without reducing individual experiences of trauma to fixed commodities, this analysis explores whether The Blue Boy is able to serve as an effective apparatus for understanding and engaging with cultural trauma. While the healing of cultural trauma will always elude us, this chapter argues that performances like The Blue Boy can compel us to explore what such a healing process might look and feel like, through the dramaturgical mechanics of representation in live performance.
