Hostelry in Extremis
This chapter focuses primarily on Hostelry in Extremis and how the hotel provided the basic necessities such as food, water, electricity, and heat for the guests. To do so, the management had to operate within the specific economic dynamics of the siege, trading on the black market and, often, trading across siege lines to acquire food and other basic goods. This chapter provides an analysis of how this was done, by both staff and the guests (who devised their own mechanisms for survival), and how the hotel functioned despite being located not only within siege lines but also directly on the frontline.
