Cambodia and the West: An Introduction

  • T. O. Smith

The introduction to Cambodia and the West 1500–2000 seeks to define the nature of the book, clarify key terms such as ‘Cambodia’ and the ‘West’, consider a number of contextual regional/transnational interplays, and highlight the scope of individual chapter author briefs in dealing with early forms of European mercantile expansion into Cambodia, formal French colonialism, British peace enforcement after World War Two, French decolonisation, United States Great Power ‘diplomacy’, and the subsequent United Nations peace process. Interwoven into the later chapters are the dynamics of Cold War conflicts and the haunting spectre of the Khmer Rouge genocide. Finally, this section also highlights possible areas for further academic inquiry.
