Introduction: Why Modernity Theory?

  • John JervisEmail author

We have a sense of the modern as something we are immersed in, as never-ending contingency and flux. We moderns are committed to exploring (mastering?) this world, but also exploring ourselves and our own investment in this world. The resulting reflexive paradoxes are deeply embedded in the modern attitude, resulting in the tensions and uncertainties that flash across our mediated awareness of such a world, and need to be grasped by an approach to modernity theory that does not reduce all this to the conflict of economic interests or an overarching historical logic, whether of progress or decline.
