The role of family groups and local connections in the development of pilgrimage sites, their support and promotion, and in the provision of hospitality to pilgrims forms the focus of this chapter. It focuses on two areas of Wales, the north-east and south-east, to see how families like the Salusburys and Stanleys may have played a role in developing holy well sites, and the Stradlings, Mathews, and Vaughans engaged with, patronised, and supported pilgrimage destinations in South Wales and overseas.
