Hong Kong: The Business Environment in the New Special Administrative Region

Abstract

There are both opportunities and dangers facing business in Hong Kong as a function of the changeover of sovereignty which took place on 1 July 1997. On that date, over 150 years of British administration (with the exception of the Japanese occupation from 1941 to 1945) came to an end and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) assumed power over the territory. The question that must be asked is whether or not the dynamic economic growth and favourable business environment of Hong Kong can be sustained under new management.
