Abstract

The area of modern Turkey equates to the ancient region of Anatolia (Asia Minor). There is evidence of human habitation in Anatolia around 7500 BC. Between 1900 and 1600 BC the area came under Hittite rule, vying for power with Egypt and eventually extending into Syria. Anatolia was regularly invaded by forces from the Greek islands and was overrun by invading Persians in the 6th century BC.
