Abstract
The margravate of Austria became a separate duchy in 1156. Vienna, the most important trading town on the Danube, received its town charter in 1198. In 1440 the rule of the Habsburgs was confirmed when Frederick III became Holy Roman Emperor. Austria was harried by the Ottoman Turks, under Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. A truce was agreed after the Ottoman defeat at Vienna in 1529.
