Abstract
Sweden was covered by an ice cap until 14,000 years ago. The first inhabitants (from 10,000 BC) were hunters and fishermen but from 500 BC agriculture predominated. Swedish Vikings set up trading stations in Russia in the 9th century AD, travelled to the Black and Caspian Seas and developed trading links with the Byzantine Empire and the Caliphate. Paganism was dominant until the end of the 11th century when the country was fully Christianized.
