Abstract
HISTORY. Following widespread civil unrest, the Shah left Iran on 17 Jan. 1979. The Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, spiritual leader of the Shi’a Moslem community, returned from 15 years’ exile on 1 Feb. 1979 and appointed a provisional government on 5 Feb.
