Abstract
The State of Ghana came into existence on 6 March 1957 when the former Colony of the Gold Coast and the Trusteeship Territory of Togo-land attained Dominion status. The name of the country recalls a powerful monarchy which from the 4th to the 13th century a.d. ruled the region of the middle Niger.
