Abstract
On the death of the Imam Ahmad on 18 Sept. 1962, army officers seized power on 26–27 Sept., declared his son, Saif Al-Islam Al-Badr (Imam Mansur Billah Muhammad), deposed and proclaimed a republic. The republican regime is supported by Egyptian troops, whereas the royalist tribes receives aid from Saudi Arabia. A cease-fire agreement came into force on 8 Nov. 1964, but was not strictly adhered to by either side.
