Abstract

GOVERNMENT AND CONSTITUTION. Indonesia is a sovereign, independent Republic which was proclaimed by Dr Sukarno and Dr Hatta on 17 Aug. 1945. In the 16th century Portuguese traders in quest of spices settled in some of the islands, but were ejected 50 years later by the British and the Dutch (1595). The latter finally ousted the former. From 1602 the Netherlands East India Company conquered the Netherlands Bast Indies, and ruled them during nearly 2 centuries. After the dissolution of the company in 1798 the Netherlands possessions were governed by the mother-country from 1816 to 1945.
