Abstract

Since the unconditional surrender of the German armed forces on 8 May 1945 there has been no central authority whose writ runs in the whole of Germany. In the absence of a formal peace treaty, the country is virtually partitioned between the Federal Bepublic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic.
