Abstract

CONSTITUTION AND GOVERNMENT. The Republic of Guatemala was established on 17 April 1839, after having formed for 18 years part of the Confederation of Central America. Following the revolution of June 1954, which overthrew and exiled President Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán and brought Col. Castillo Armas into power, the Constitution of 1945 was replaced in Aug. 1954 by a ‘Political Statute.’ On 2 Feb. 1956 a new Constitution was signed by the President; it came into force 1 March 1956. Voting is compulsory for men and women over 18 who can read, and optional for illiterate men.
