Abstract

Portugal has been an independent state since the 12th century; until 1910 it was a monarchy. The last King was Manoel 11 of the house of Braganza-Coburg, born 15 Nov., 1889, died 2 July, 1932. On 5 Oct., 1910, the republic was proclaimed, after a short revolution, and a provisional government established with Dr. Teopbile Braga as the provisional president (5 Oct., 1910, to 24 Aug., 1911) Thereafter there were duly elected presidents, as follows: —
